  • An important theme that emerged in the book is how the SS Officers treated the prisoners regularly. Three things that impacted Ellies life was the Gleiwitz, running to evacuate, and the SS Officers. The SS Officers helped evacuate most of the prisoners. They made the prisoners run the whole way and if someone stoped they would get shot. Ellie wanted to stop but forced himself to go on and he kept faith because his father was running next to him. They arrived to and empty town. Then they went to the Gleiwitz and the SS shoved people into barracks and got little bread. Many people were so thirsty they ate snow of peoples shoulders. " Someone had the idea of quenching his thirst by eating snow (Wiesel 96). Everyone was on top of each other and most people on the bottom died because of the lack of air. "You're crushing me... have mercy" (Wiesel 93)! The theme about the SS Officers connects to my own life by when my parents tell me to do something but not as harsh as what the SS did.

  1. I agree. Cruelty and hate is the theme throughout the book. I think some of the SS Officers were monsters and others were afraid not to follow orders. What the SS Officers had to do was to select only the strong Jews because they had to work them and there were too many to keep them all. The purpose of the holocaust was to eliminating the Jewish race. That is beyond harsh.
