What went on behind these barbed wire fences


This photo shows the barbed wire fence that the Jews were trapped behind in Buchenwald. If anyone ever tried to escape they would be shot by an SS soldier. The Jews didn’t go near this fence unless they were done trying and the blows and torture were getting too overwhelming.  Behind the barbed wire fence stands the barracks. This is where the Jews were forced to live and sleep. The Nazi’s fit almost 1,500 people into these little barracks.

In Night it is obvious that Elie is losing his faith. It had become apparent in the first few chapters of this book that Elie was questioning his faith, but now he has almost completely lost it. "But look at these men whom You have betrayed, allowing them to be tortured, slaughtered, gassed, and burned, what do they do? They pray before You! They praise Your name!" (Wiesel 68). "As I swallowed my ration of soup, I turned that act into a symbol of rebellion, of protest against Him" (Wiesel 69). Elie was once a strong believer in his God, but now he is having a battle with himself that is challenging everything that he was raised to believe. Then again, you can't blame him. Think about everything him and all the other Jews have gone through. If I was in his situation I would definitely feel the same.
