"What a Concept" Found Poem by Izzy Cone

What a Concept

A found poem from the memoir “Night”
By Isabelle Cone

The orchestra, once calling
Of melodies evoking gentle waters
I thought only of
The sanctuary in Jerusalem.
Liberation
What a concept.
Musicians now are watching the ailing bodies fall
They cannot help
They simply watch for eternity.
Temptation to give water
Temptation to give rations
They cannot help.
No reason to pray
Anymore
Is there sympathy anywhere?
Sympathy for being empty
Sympathy for aching bones and stomachs
Sympathy is found nowhere.
Eyes shining with desire
At a piece of moldy bread.
I wanted to quench my thirst
From the blood of other’s flesh
Every day I became closer to Him
And closer to death.
God’s orchestra does not care about his disciples
God only cares about himself.
Liberation
What a concept.

  2. I could really feel the emotion in this poem. Above all, I felt frustrated because I feel like I should help whoever is suffering in this poem. There is also sadness. It is sad because of the suffering. I cannot imagine what it would be like to go through such traumatic events.
